A private family service celebrating Don’s life was held on Monday, March 28, 2022 at Guilford Memorial Park, where he was laid to rest.
Don was born on February 19, 1938 in New York, New York to the late John Dempster Charters and Isabella Storrie Charters and was a life-long member of the Presbyterian Church. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Penn State University and then his Master’s Degree in Economics from Gannon University in Erie, PA. Don worked as a Data Base Administrator for General Electric for 22 years. He then worked as a supervisor of security for Douglas Battery in Winston-Salem, NC. Don was a life-long member of the YMCA and volunteered there for many years. He was a Mason for 66 years, was a 32nd degree Mason for 50 years, was a proud member of Revolution Lodge #552 AF & AM and held the position of Secretary of the Masonic Lodge for several years. Don also served in the United States Army. He participated and volunteered in Scouting with both of his children and he himself was Scout from a very young age. He loved reading all kinds of books, specifically his Bible, (which he read cover to cover numerous times) and Tom Clancy books. Don enjoyed quilting, cross-stitching, swimming, volunteering for various organizations and was a life-long donor for the American Red Cross. He sang in the church choir both as a participate and as a soloist from the age of 10. Don also loved singing along with his wife as she played the piano. He enjoyed long walks with his dogs, Chance and Cindy. Don was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Alexander Charters and his sister-in-law, Betty Charters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Sonya K. Charters; daughter, Dawn “DeeDee” Marie Lewis and her husband Michael E. Lewis, Jr.; son, David Andrew Charters; granddaughter, Emma Taylor Lewis; grandson, Matthew Spencer Lewis; niece, Leslie Shellenbarger and her husband Ralph; nephews, Scott Charters and Doug Charters and his wife Diana; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
