David Hollinshead Long, 66, of Greensboro died on Monday, June 28 2021 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. David was born on November 12, 1954, to Richard and Betty Layne Long, both now deceased. He grew up in Roxboro, NC in a lively household with four siblings, and attended Person Senior High School before college at Atlantic Christian and Appalachian State. He then served in the US Air Force prior to returning to Roxboro in 1979. David worked at Vann York Toyota for several years but spent most of his adulthood as a self-employed contractor in Greensboro and High Point.
David was a force to be reckoned with, and he will be sorely missed. He was an entertaining storyteller--one who enjoyed embellishing many of his tales to make them more interesting. He was also quick-witted, loved a good joke, and could have a roomful of people in stitches for hours at a time. Always a good athlete and a lover of golf, he dealt with numerous physical problems in recent years. Nonetheless, he remained hopeful and willing to endure surgery after surgery in attempts to return to the golf course. Those who knew him know that as much as he enjoyed sports, his first love was his family, and he especially cherished his role as a dad.
David was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Cathy L. Snodgrass. Surviving are children, David Lane Long of Tarboro and Kara Long Hergenrader (Matt) of Raleigh; wife, Rosalind Jones Long of the home; stepdaughters, Rachelle Lambly and Savannah Oldham; grandchildren, Garrett and Emma Gray Hergenrader; step grandchildren, Jaylen Thompson and Karma Crockett; as well as his siblings, Gwynn L. Winstead, Richard G. Long, Jr. (Susan) and N. Thompson Long (Elizabeth). His aunt and uncle, Marilyn and Warren Hollinshead also survive, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends---most notably, those from his hometown, who have been steadfast in their support for him over the years.
A memorial service is planned for 11:30am on Saturday, August 7, 2021, at Long Memorial Methodist Church, 226 N. Main Street, Roxboro, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall, Long Memorial.
Due to Covid restrictions seating will be limited and masks are requested.
