There will be a Memorial Service celebrating his life in the Sanctuary of West Market Street Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 26, 2014, immediately followed by a reception at the church. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home at 515 North Elm St. from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
David was born on September 1, 1929 to David McKenzie and Myrtle Brogdon Clark of Greenville, NC. He was a graduate of Greenville High School, Wake Forest University, served in the United States Coast Guard, before graduating from New York University Law School in 1957 where he was a Root-Tilden Scholar and Editor of the NYU Law Review. After graduating law school, he clerked for two years with Justice Hugo Black at the United States Supreme Court. In 1959, he moved to Greensboro, NC, to join the law firm of Smith, Moore, Smith, Schell, & Hunter. He was an accomplished and respected litigator in Greensboro until his retirement in 2007.
David was an active community volunteer. He served as President of The Summit Rotary Club, Program Chairman of the Greensboro Jaycee Chapter, Guilford County Chapter National Foundation, Greensboro Library Board, and served on the Official Board and as a Sunday School Teacher at West Market Street United Methodist Church. He served professional organizations where his duties included serving as Chairman of the Greensboro Legal Aid Foundation, Director of The Legal Services of North Carolina, and the Board of governors of the North Carolina Bar Association.
He lived his life helping others personally and professionally. He took great interest in the well being of others and was always quick with an offer of help or a kind word. He spent much of his professional life advocating for those less fortunate giving them a strong voice to correct wrongs against them.
He was a loving father who dearly loved his children and instilled his love of sports in them. He was an avid tennis player who played on the Wake Forest tennis team. He also loved golf and played regularly at the Greensboro Country Club. He treasured the time he was able to spend with his family and many friends playing tennis and golf and enjoying a good meal.
David is survived by his five children and nine grandchildren – David McKenzie Clark (Lee Ann) of Greensboro, NC and their children Will, Patrick, and Jackson; Martha Dockery Clark of Charlotte, NC; Marietta Clark Reynolds (Richard) of Richmond, VA and her children Martha Blair, Clark, and Sarah; Carolyn Clark Taylor (Bryan) of Charlotte, NC and their children Mac, Caroline, and Julian; and McKenzie Lawrence Mullally Clark (Katie) of Carlisle, PA. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Catherine Montague Huber.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to his assistant of 54 years Margaret T. Bell of Reidsville, NC and the loving staff of Wellspring Memory Care Unit.
