Cornelia “Connie” Davis Doolan was born March 26, 1937 in Savannah, Georgia to Mary Wilder Davis and Marvin Geer Davis. She had a wonderful childhood in Savannah, playing tennis, riding horses and swimming at Tybee. After graduating from the Pape School, she attended Mary Baldwin College and The University of Georgia.
She worked for the Savannah Morning News, writing the society column—“Out and About.” She was perfectly suited to the columnist job, which required her to attend all the festive events and celebrations. Later she worked her favorite job, at Books Unlimited, where she was able to share with others the immense joy that she got from reading. Connie was an avid gardener who loved to plant every spring and to enjoy the results. Her garden Club and her book Club brought her the joy of many friendships.
Connie married her husband of 60 years, Edward Eloy Doolan in 1961. As a young couple, they lived in downtown Savannah. They moved to Greensboro in 1966, where they settled in as Tar Heels quickly.
Connie was active with the Junior League of Savannah and Greensboro. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Cerebral Palsy School, Holy Trinity Church, and at her childrens’ schools: Our Lady of Grace and Grimsley High School. She served on the board of the Weatherspoon Art Gallery for years and supported the Eastern Music Festival every summer. She had a grand time traveling to Europe, the Galapagos and Alaska with Eloy and their friends. She loved Emerald Isle and spending time there with her children and grandchildren brought her great happiness.
Connie is predeceased by her parents, Marvin Geer Davis and Mary Wilder Davis.
She is survived by her beloved husband Edward Eloy Doolan; her son Patrick Stapleton Doolan of Fayetteville; her daughter, Mary Maclean Asbill and husband R. Brandon Asbill of Raleigh; and three grandchildren, Mac Asbill, Annie Asbill and Molly Asbill; a sister, Merrill Davis Guttry; and eleven nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, March 21, 2022 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, NC followed by a reception at the church.
