A reception in his honor will be held at the Alumni House (404 College Avenue) at UNC-Greensboro on Saturday, August 26th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This will be an informal gathering of family, colleagues, friends, and students past and present whom he mentored. Please park in the Oakland Avenue Parking Deck (690 Forest Street).
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27th, at First Lutheran Church (3600 W. Friendly Avenue) in Greensboro with visitation to follow. A private family interment will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Snow Camp, North Carolina.
Chris graduated from Morehead High School in Eden and went on to attend The University of North Carolina in Greensboro earning his Ph.D. in Educational Studies while also working as the Coordinator of International Honors and Senior Academic Advisor in the Lloyd International Honors College.
Chris was a compassionate and kind person. He was an avid reader and loved literature and poetry. Some of his favorite authors were Robert Macfarlane, Barry Lopez, Seamus Heaney and Czelaw Milosz. He had a passion for teaching; hoping to kindle an appreciation for literature and writing in his students.
Chris leaves behind his wife Adriana and two young sons; his mother, Marjorie Kirkman of Eden; two older brothers, Kenny Kirkman and wife Tina and Timmy Kirkman and wife Kelly. He also leaves behind his brother-in-law, Steven Zúñiga as well as 2 nieces and 3 nephews and their families. Chris was preceded in death by his father, Kenan Wayne Kirkman.
