Charles was born on May 4, 1920, the son of Irvin J. and Bettie Craven Pickard. He was the ninth of ten children, all of whom have predeceased him. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the 260th Combat Engineer Battalion in England, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium.
On July 5, 1941, he married Marie Cox. Charles was a lifelong resident of Guilford County. He joined Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Davidson County, where he served as pastor in the 1950s and 1960s. During that same period of time, he also served as pastor of Flat Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Davidson County.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Marie in 2000 and son, Allen Charles Pickard. Surviving are his son, Thomas I. Pickard and wife Jane of Lexington, NC; daughter, Paula Pickard Landreth of Snow Camp, NC; granddaughter, Cindie Marshall and husband Eric of Stokesdale, NC; great-grandchildren Courtney and Erica Marshall; and, several and nephews.
