Charlene Fields, 68, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on May 3, 2023 after a valiant and courageous three year battle with brain cancer. Charlene was born on February 26, 1955 in Port Angeles, Washington. Her father, Retired Lieutenant Colonel, was in the Army and Charlene lived in many states and countries throughout her childhood. Finally, her family settled in Lawrenceville, GA when Charlene was in her early teens. She had a 30-year career as a flight attendant with Delta Airlines before retiring. Charlene loved to travel and see the world with her family and close friends by her side.
Most of her closest friends knew her as “Chan” or “Char” but the name she preferred the most was being called “Nana” by her four grandsons. Charlene was a “do-it-yourself” kind of lady. She had amazing talents for gardening, cooking, sewing, and could fix anything. Her smile was infectious and her compassion for helping others went above and beyond. She had a true servant heart which was shown by sharing her gifts with the community; she was an avid volunteer at Out of the Garden Project and the Interactive Resource Center of Greensboro.
Charlene was a devoted wife, supportive mother, loving nana, and an incredible friend. She will be forever missed. Her legacy will live on in the values she instilled in her family.
Charlene is survived by her husband of 40 years, Bill Fields; daughter Katie Smart, her husband, Samuel, and infant son, Lewis, of Greensboro, NC; daughter Laura Grant, her husband, Matthew, and their sons Henry, Carter, and Isaac of Charleston, SC; brother Jamie Harward and his wife Martha; brother Mike Harward; sister Kathy Corbin; and several nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. She is predeceased by her parents, James and Betty Harward; brother Larry Harward; nephew Kenny Hayden; brother in law Bob Fields; mother and father in law, Hank and Ardelle Fields.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 2pm at First Lutheran Church (3600 West Friendly Ave) in Greensboro, NC. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Duke Cancer Center & The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center, Out of the Garden Project, the Interactive Resource Center of Greensboro, or Hospice of the Piedmont.
