Carolyn Whittier Maness

A celebration of Carolyn’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 25, 2017, at WellSpring Retirement Community in the Richardson Auditorium, 4100 Well Spring Drive, Greensboro. There will be a reception for family and friends following the service.

Carolyn was born May 9, 1925, in High Point, NC, daughter to the late Albert Carl and Alleen White Jones. After graduating from High School, she graduated from UNCG, formerly Women’s College, where she served as a University Marshal and earned a Bachelor Degree in Sociology, moved to Greensboro and worked with the Red Cross. On May 1, 1948, she married John R. Maness at Springfield Friends Meeting in High Point.

Carolyn was on the board of the Children’s Home Society as well as the Preservation North Carolina, where she assumed a leading role in the preservation of the chancellor’s residence at UNCG. She was a founding member of the Greensboro Symphony Guild, a sustaining member of Junior League of Greensboro, the Greensboro Country Club, and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Her abiding interests were her family and traveling.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Maness was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Maness; sisters, Helen Jones Herndon, Sarah Wilson Jones and her brothers, Carl and William Jones. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Dudley and husband, Henry of Chevy Chase, MD, Carolyn c. “Lyn” Maness of Raleigh; grandchildren, Carolyn George and husband, Kenneth of Chevy Chase, MD, Henry Dudley and wife, Archer of Washington, DC; great grandchildren, Kenneth George, III, John Cabell, Holden Ann and nephew, John William Herndon, Jr. of High Point.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the caregivers and staff of WellSpring.
