Lyn was educated at the Greensboro Cerebral Palsy School and chose to receive her diploma from Grimsley High School. A worker at the Voluntary Action Center, Lyn earned recognition as the first recipient of the Farish S. Cochran Outstanding Volunteer Award. She served on the Mayor's Committee on the Disabled and most recently served as the President of the SCAT Rider's Advisory Committee.
Lyn was neither defined by any of her accomplishments nor by her lifetime physical sufferings caused by Spastic Cerebral Palsy. As one of her deathbed nurses remarked, “Lyn had a ‘gift.’" Everyone who knew her liked her. Though popular culture no longer seems to appreciate graciousness and a genteel manner, such qualities oozed from her every pore; she was her parents' child. Always deferring to and thinking of others, almost the last intelligible words Lyn uttered to her family were "Everything will be all right." Her toleration, even acceptance, of her constant pain and discomforts was a jarring reminder to others of the need to be thankful for what they have and not to bemoan the circumstances that do not fall into place as they may wish.
Lyn's best gift was her ability to make the best of any situation. From September 19, when her digestive system first imperiled her life, until her death, there was only one day when one could not easily coax a smile from her. She led a grand life when the initial prospect of one was barely an option. Countless people know they are better persons because they crossed paths with her.
Lyn was a person of strong faith, and a service to celebrate her victory over death will take place at 2:00 pm, Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Buffalo Presbyterian Church. Burial will be prior to the service at 1:00 pm at Westminster Gardens. Her family will meet with friends on Wednesday from 6-8 pm at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, 515 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC.
Surviving Lyn are her brother, Philip J. Weaver, Jr. and wife Suzanne; nieces, Jennifer W. Mikita and husband David; Stacy W. Hummer and husband Mike; Cary W. Casterline and husband Jason; Kathryn V. Mills and husband Chris; nephew Justin A. DeSimone and wife Alice; and eight grand nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to The Bell House (Lyn's residential facility for 30 years), 2400 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
