Calvin A. Stanley, “Tab” or “Uncle Tab” as he was often called by family and friends was born and lived in Greensboro for all but the last 10 years of his life. He was born on July 11th, 1924 on the family farm at 2855 Horse Pen Creek Rd.
Tab was married to Marie Stanley for 68 years. They did not have any children.
Tab served his country in the United States Navy from 1941-1945. He was a gunner and was on active duty during the attack on Pearl Harbor which forced the United States to enter into World War II.
Tab worked for and retired from Carolina Steel.
Tab kept his farm, in northern Greensboro, raising cattle and hay until he was 85 years old. What was once beautiful country was eventually swallowed up by the northern expansion of the city. For Tab, the farm was home. It was where he was born, it was his second job, and it was where he attended church. He professed his faith in Jesus Christ as a boy at Jessup Grove Baptist Church, where the Stanley’s attended services. The farm was Tab’s life before moving to Florida to live and be taken care of by his niece, Ester Hidle, and extended family. During his last ten years he was surrounded by family, attended Lockheart Baptist Church, and kept everyone busy.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park.
