When affected by severe and chronic illnesses most of us would ask “Why me?” but Mrs. Brent Elizabeth King Mabe asked “Why not me?” She left this Earth on July 30, 2015 at Moses Cone Hospital after a fifteen year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Her life will be celebrated on August 3 at Centenary UMC in Greensboro at 2 PM officiated by Reverend Kelly Groce. The family will receive friends following the service.
Brent was born in Morganton to Nelda Perry King and the late William Earl King, Jr. She was a graduate of Page High School and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on accounting from UNC-CH. She was initiated into Phi Eta Sigma as a freshman and later was a member of Delta Sigma Pi where she served as the first woman president. She was first employed by Deloitt, Haskins, and Sells, worked in the banking and insurance industries and finished her career at Wendover Financial.
Anyone who had the pleasure of having Brent touch their life would use words like strong, courageous, inspirational and independent to describe her. In the face of adversity she never complained but instead her true character of a giving and loving spirit endured. Brent would tell you that her love of life and love of her family was what kept her from giving in. So many times when doctors and family thought God would take her home instead he continued to bless them and kept Brent here to be motivating and encouraging to others. Gift giving was her love language and she enjoyed showering family and friends with presents she bought or something she made. She also had a heart for the less fortunate and contributed to several charitable causes. She was extremely creative and artistic, loved sewing, needlework and drawing. Everyone in the family has a hand-made Christmas stocking from Brent and will cherish the memory of her love of the meaning of Christmas, sharing family traditions and family togetherness. She kept a twinkle in her eye and a clever “one liner” at the ready. She and her husband, Steve, of thirty five years, loved to spend time traveling extensively and trips to the beach, mountains, or lake.
In addition to Steve, Brent is survived by her mother, Mrs. Nelda P. King of Greensboro; brother, Brian (Sonia) King of Tampa, FL; sister, Laura (Robert) Clarke of Durham; niece, Jacqueline King of Tampa; and two nephews, Michael and John Roberson of Durham. Also surviving are her parents-in–law, Madeline Hodge of Greensboro and Jimmy (Betty) Mabe of Salem, VA; and sister-in-law, Carol (Joel) Batchelor of Rocky Mount.
The family would like to thank Dr. Steve South, Dr. Brad Sherrill and Mrs. Lisa Thomas, F.N.P. for their kindness and compassion over the course of Brent’s illness. They also appreciate her caregivers, Charlene Holt and Denise Aller of Homestead Senior Care for being a source of strength for Brent’s family, and the staffs of Wesley Long and Moses Cone Hospitals for their exemplary care. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or Susan G. Komen Fund are greatly appreciated. Hanes-Lineberry N. Elm chapel is assisting the Mabe family.
