Betty lived life to the fullest each and every day and did so, as Sinatra would sing it “My Way”.
Her zest for life was infectious and she had many friends and loves, everywhere she went. She played well with others and could be called, without question, the life of every party.
Her life’s journey took her from Burlington North Carolina to Greensboro where she met her future husband, Edward “Ted “H Smith. Together they raised four girls; Valorey Lawton, Vickie Shields, Vandee Dennis, and Vawn Smith Schroll until tragically Ted passed in 1983.
Quick to recover and live a life full of fun she met many and enjoyed all. Most especially her growing family of grandchildren; Lee Steel, Brad Lawton, Bryan and Ben Dunham, Boston Shields, and Andrew and Jack Dennis.
So lucky in love was Betty that in 1992 she married again to Donald F Reid. Together they shared lovely days golfing, gardening and enjoying their friends in St. Louis and then Sun City Arizona. Don was treasured by all of Betty‘s family and she was able to enjoy and love all of his too. It was a remarkable union.
In 2015 seven years after Don‘s passing, she relocated to River Landing in Colfax North Carolina to be near her daughter Vawn and other family and friends from her North Carolina roots. Her life at River Landing was wonderful and rich and included golf, cheerleading, band, (she played a very enthusiastic tambourine) and intercommunity Senior Olympics where she won several medals in putting and walking.
Her real joy throughout life was dancing, or better called shaking it with reckless abandon. At a party, at a wedding, in the aisle of the grocery store, she had happy feet and a silly streak and loved the attention her antics would arouse.
Our family was fortunate to spend Betty‘s 90th birthday together at the beach in North Carolina. True to form she excelled in the joy of being the center of attention. This was her chance to better know some of the great grandkids and show them how to play hard and laugh alot. None of us will forget those treasured memories. Betty’s beautiful smile and gusto for fun will be everlasting.
Upon arrival and living at River Landing she was independent and lived at Harbor Town. This past year she was moved to assisted living at Muirfield and then memory care at Saint Andrews and then, Pebble Beach. Everywhere she lived in River Landing the staff was helpful, kind, loving, and kept her best interest at heart. Not enough good things can be said about them. She loved them like family.
A memorial service and celebration of life reception will be held on June 10 at 3:00 pm in the multipurpose room at River Landing, 1575 John Knox Dr., Colfax, NC. 27235
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Brightspire Foundation or The Presbyterian Homes Foundation, Inc., and can be mailed to Marisa Ray, Director of Development, 2109 Sandy Ridge Road, Colfax, NC 27235.
