Betty was born in Durham, NC on May 10, 1935, to Roy Thomas Cash, Sr., and Ila Adell Cash. She lived with her parents until she was age eleven, when her mother passed away. At that time two exceptional sisters, Minnie and Lizzie Grey Chandler, took Betty and her sisters into their home. Together they provided love and guidance that helped shape Betty’s character and values. Betty and her family returned to Minnie and Lizzie Grey for every holiday and many visits throughout their lives.
An avid student, she attended Catawba College, where she helped start a chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, and where she met her husband, Adair Edward Chambers, Jr. After graduating from Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) with a degree in Education, Betty earned her master’s in library science at Women’s College in Greensboro (now UNCG). She continued her love of learning into her retirement when she took classes in Computers and Spanish.
Betty served the Greensboro City Schools system for over 25 years as a media specialist and NCAE union representative, touching countless lives with her warmth and dedication. She taught at Archer Elementary, Lindley Junior High, Mendenhall Junior High, as well as Claxton Elementary and Dudley High School.
Inspired by a sermon she heard, Betty was baptized at the age of nine and remained committed to her faith all her life. She enjoyed sharing the work of God as a teacher and congregational leader. She attended Centenary Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Pittard class. She enjoyed worship retreats at Lake Junaluska, and she began each day with prayer doing her devotions. Betty gave service throughout her life, going where she was needed - giving blood regularly, traveling to Mexico to serve for the church, visiting an out-of-town, aged relative regularly, and many other volunteer services. She also loved nature and enjoyed working in her many gardens.
Family was very important to Betty. She was proud to have raised five children, and remains a beloved mother, “Grandma”, and “Gigi” to us. She traveled with her children and promoted their education. She championed her children and grandchildren, encouraging them in their interests, and attending their sporting events - particularly soccer - regardless of the weather.
Betty is joined in eternal rest with her parents, Roy Thomas Cash, Sr., and Ila Adele Cash, sister Ruby Lee, brother R. T. Cash, Jr., foster mother Minnie Chandler, adoptive mother Lizzy Grey Chandler, her niece Kathy Mincey, and her beloved husband Adair Edward Chambers, Jr.
Betty’s legacy lives on through her children Alan Ross Chambers (Tania), Elizabeth Chambers Pittman, Ann Lynn Chambers, Anthony Edward Chambers (Heather), and Elaine Grey Chambers (Todd Miller). She leaves behind five cherished grandchildren; Jonathon Pittman, Richard Chambers (Susan), Dr. Lauren Chambers (Elier Bermudez), James Chambers (Ashley), Bryce Chambers (Hannah), and two great-grandchildren: Katie Grace Pittman and Hazel Adair Chambers. She also leaves behind her sisters Barbara Long (John) and Joyce Peterson, niece Jan Stutts (Mike), nephews Bobby and Mark Evans, grandnephews Danny, Derek, and Jeffery Stutts, Zack and Garrett Mincey, and a very special family friend Paul Stiles, along with many great-grandnieces and nephews and beloved friends.
Betty Jean Cash Chambers remains forever cherished and will be dearly missed.
