She was born in Cleveland Ohio to Harold and Genevieve Whitcomb. Her father was a Navy pilot and flight instructor during the early days of Naval Aviation. She grew up in Scarsdale NY and graduated from Northwestern University. She worked for IBM in New York City until she married Robert Bunker in 1949. His job with Klopman Mills took them to Asheboro NC for a “few months” that stretched to fifty years.
Betty was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 54 years “Bob”, her daughter Deborah, her brother-in-law Marshall Wolf, and her companion and bridge partner at Well-Spring, Dr. John Lore.
Betty is survived by three children: Robin Timmins (Paul), Dumont Bunker, and Anne Deutsch (Rob). She has five grandchildren: Anne Confer (Ryan), Catherine McKenzie (Scott), Michael Timmins, Stephen Deutsch (Blakely) and Philip Deutsch.
She has six great-granddaughters: Cece, Emma, Alice, Millie, Lucy and Caroline.
She is also survived by her sister, Deanie Wolf, Deanie’s two children, Wendy White (Jon) and Charlie Wolf (Meg), and Wendy’s children, Andrew and Melissa.
Betty was a wonderful grandmother who enjoyed creating birthday cards with her own poems, as well as baking fancy holiday cookies that we can’t seem to duplicate. She forced herself to learn to use a computer when she discovered that the New York Times Crossword could be delivered to her before breakfast.
Her family will hold a private memorial service.
Betty was an avid reader and library volunteer. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your local public library in her memory.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.haneslineberryfhnorthelm.com for the Bunker family.
