Greensboro - Barbara Crittenden Miller Barksdale, born April 3, 1929, died February 15, 2013 at her home. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Jean and Martha, her brother, Claudius, and her dogs, Lily, Fanny, Scout and Emma.
Barbara was a teacher for over forty years in Manhattan and Washington, DC. She ended her career in 1998 at The Potomac School in McLean, Virginia.
We would like to raise a toast to Barbara: A loyal and generous friend and a remarkable aunt. As a self-taught gourmet cook, she made elaborate meals and hosted memorable dinner parties. She was an adventure traveller before her time, with trips to Egypt, Africa, Cambodia, the Galapagos Islands and Peru. She loved music and the arts and taught us to appreciate them as well. She was a yellow dog democrat, an accomplished New York Times Sunday crossword puzzler, a rollerblader, and a stickler for proper grammar. We will miss her wit and kindness. As she was wont to say, “Bravo! - for a life well lived.”
She is survived by her nieces and nephews and their families, True and John Campbell, Amy and James Whiting, Peter and Debi Miller, Rusty and Gail Yeiser, and Patricia Yeiser; her sister-in-law Sally Miller; her godson, Charles Tinsley; and her “number 1” caregiver for the past four years, Tina Goins Browning.
A Memorial Service will be held at the beginning of March at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, who helped with her peaceful transition from this earth.
Hanes Lineberry N. Elm Chapel is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com
