Ann was born in Greensboro, NC to James L. Jones and Ruth Tyson Jones. She graduated from Rankin High School, and immediately married the love of her life, Richard Spivey. This started a wonderful adventure of yearly family trips to Long Beach with grandparents, aunts, uncles and a gaggle of cousins in tow. There were family cookouts and every Sunday after church there were visits with both sets of grandparents and extended family. Family was the greatest joy of Ann’s life.
Ann’s life was forever altered when Richard died at age 39 on a beach trip. She was left with four children and no idea how to face the world without Richard. In her stubborn and determined way, she got a job and moved forward as best she could. In her grief, Ann found deceptive relief in alcohol, which cheated Ann and her children in every way. In 1978, Ann entered Fellowship Hall, and through AA and God’s grace a journey of family healing was able to begin. What a journey it has been! Ann later became a substance abuse counselor at Fellowship Hall where she touched many lives and made life-long friends. Her family has had to survive so much loss and heartache, but Ann’s courage, faith and strength held everyone together with the safe haven that had been her parent’s home and was now hers.
Ann’s 91 years were filled with family and friends whose lives have been forever impacted by her caring and love. Have no doubt she maintained her stubbornness to the end.
Ann was the second child born into her family. She was preceeded in death by her brothers John and Norman, and her sister Carolyn. Her brother Jim (Honor) and sister Helen will greatly miss her, as well as her much loved sister-in-law Barbara. Ann was also preceded by her grandsons Jamie, Christopher and Ryan. Ann lost her friends one by one, but two remained who made her life joyful and fun, Connye and Steve.
Ann loved and was deeply loved by her children Rhonda (T), Rick, Ed (Kim) and Bunny.
The lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren are forever enriched by her deep love for them and the memories they shared: Wes (Lauren) and sons Nash and Wyatt; Tyson (Zane) and children Anna and Gray; Richard; Tyson (Adrian) and children Tyler, Max and Zoey; and grandson Peter.
Advanced age had robbed Ann of her ability to pursue her passions, especially working in her yard and riding her lawnmower. She left this world in peace. Ann donated her body to the Elon Anatomical Gift Program. The family wishes to thank Dianne Person for the dignity and kindness shown to them and their mother. At Ann’s request, there will be no service.
Ann has requested that memorial contributions be made to Fellowship Hall, 5140 Dunstan Road, Greensboro, NC 27405, or to Greensboro Urban Ministries, 305 W. Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC 27406 or to the charity of your choice.
