Ann Borden Evans McIver of Wellspring Retirement Community in Greensboro died in the loving presence of her children on Tuesday, January 17, 2012. She left a legacy of love, hope and vibrancy to all those she touched.
Ann was born to E. Hervey Evans, Sr. and Anne Borden Evans on May 28, 1927 in Laurinburg, NC where she grew up with four brothers and a lively neighborhood of children. She graduated from Hollins College in 1949, where she developed many friendships and a love for learning, arts and world affairs. In 1951 she married John Jones McIver and settled in Greensboro where they started their family. Raised to respect the dignity and worth of all people, Ann engaged in numerous civic and humanitarian causes, more often than not working quietly in the background. Serving as president of the Greensboro Junior League in the 1960’s she led the effort to grow the Greensboro cerebral palsy school. In response to the civil rights movement she helped found the Great Decisions program here to further understanding and dialogue. Ann was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and active in numerous capacities. Forever curious, she also actively participated in study sessions by the Wednesday Afternoon Book Club and the Friday Club. She was also a member of the Guilford Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
Ann was loved by friends and family for her ceaseless energy, quick wit, and love of life. She had a remarkable ability to recall names and details of acquaintances and ancestors alike; soon after engaging her in conversation you were likely to learn how you were kin. A devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt and dear friend, Ann was loved by many. She was predeceased by her husband, John McIver, and brothers E. Hervey Evans, Jr., John Evans, and McNair Evans and is survived by three children, Robert McIver and wife Mary of Summerfield, Hervey McIver and wife Jane of Hillsborough and Ann Borden Thomas and husband Sledd of Pittsboro, seven grandchildren and her brother Murphy Evans of Raleigh. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 21 followed by a reception. The family will receive friends at the Wellspring Retirement Community private living room Friday, January 20 between 3 and 5 PM.
Memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church (617 N. Elm St., Greensboro, NC 27401) or The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro (330 S. Greene St., Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27401)
