Another member of America’s Greatest Generation has passed. Alvin Wallace Chandler died on January 12th, 2011 at the Pennybyrn at Maryfield nursing facility in High Point, NC. Know as ‘Happy’ Chandler to colleagues, friends, and family, he is survived by two sons, Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alvin Chandler and wife Carolyn of Colonial Heights, VA and George Chandler and wife Lyn of High Point, NC. Also, surviving, a brother Loyd Burdette Chandler of Houston, TX. A sister, Dorrace Glenn of Greer, SC preceded him in death.
Mr. Chandler was born in Newnan, GA on September 6, 1921 to Sanders Alvin Chandler and Annie Wallace Investor. He graduated from Marietta High School, Marietta, GA in 1938 and entered Clemson A & M College, Clemson SC graduating in 1942 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and commissioned as a 2LT in the US Army. Following WWII he married Mary Robertson of Waverly, AL on July 7, 1946 in Newport News, VA. Following his discharge in 1947, they lived in Houston, TX and moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1949 where he served as the plant manager for Armor Fertilizer Works, Caribbean division. He relocated to Greensboro, NC in 1959 as manager of USS Agri Chemicals, retiring in 1980. Following the death of his wife in October, 1996, he later married Lila Vuncannon Dale on December 13, 2003. They moved from Stadler Place in Guilford College, NC to Pennybyrn at Maryfield in High Point in 2008. With this marriage he was honored to welcome two step sons, Jackson Dale and wife Gail of Danville, VA and Daniel Dale and wife Linda of High Point, NC.
Mr. Chandler is also survived by four grandchildren, Jeffrey Chandler and wife Melanie of Lexington, NC, Jason Chandler and wife Elizabeth of Petersburg, VA, Laura McCants and husband Charles of Raleigh, NC and Daniel Chandler, Appalachian State Univ. Boone, NC. Always interested in their continued success, his effort toward their education was indicative of his kind and caring nature.
His five great grandchildren include Sydney (7), Riley (6), Ethan (5), Reid (2), and Liam (1). All were adored by their Great Pa and scooter riders were a highlight of their Pennybyrn visits.
Mr. Chandler was an avid golfer and served as tournament director for the Greensboro Super Seniors Golf Club playing at Longview Golf Club. He was a member of the Crescent Rotary Club, and Greensboro’s First Baptist Church, Barnabas Sunday School Class. He enjoyed attending and supporting his Clemson Tigers football and Atlanta Braves baseball. Active in the Pennybyrn community he enjoyed playing bridge and the fellowship.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Stephen Pressley officiating. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park. Mr. Chandler will remain at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 High Point Road, Greensboro, NC 27407. The family will receive friends in the Multi-Purpose Room at Pennybryn at Maryfield on Friday from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and at the church Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
