She was born April 10, 1926, in Greensboro and was the daughter of the late John Albert and Lindy Blanche Lewey Lowdermilk. She grew up in the Tate Street community of Greensboro and graduated from Curry High School. She was a retired bookkeeper with Carlyle and Company Jewelers in downtown Greensboro and a member of Trinity Church where she had volunteered in the church library and was an active prayer warrior.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Iris L. Penney and Elizabeth Lowdermilk; a brother, John Wesley Lowdermilk; and three granddaughters, Joy M. Southern, Hope M. Southern, and Heidi K. Southern.
She is survived by a son, Kenneth “Ken” C. Southern of Greensboro; a daughter, Judith “Judy” Lingle of Gastonia; a daughter-in-law, Rea W. Southern of Pleasant Garden; eight grandchildren, to whom she was known as Meme, Kenny Southern, Tammy S. Nichols (Rick), and Amy M. Southern, all of Greensboro, Tommy Southern (Jennifer) of Statesville, Corey S. Southern of Pleasant Garden, Annette Whitman of Binghampton, NY, Charles Gales of Greensboro, and Carol Rettig of Gastonia; eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday in the Red Greer Memorial Chapel of Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, Vanstory Street, with the Rev. Olaf van de Klashorst and the Rev. Tommy Southern officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 PM Wednesday at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Service, Vanstory Chapel, and at other times will assemble at the home of her granddaughter, Tammy Nichols, 1323 Perga Court, Greensboro.
