Stanley Hurst

Stanley Hurst was born January 25, 1926 near Tazewell in Claiborne County, TN, the eleventh and last child born to John Wiley and Elizabeth Hipshire Hurst. When he was nine years old, TVA bought all the land along the Big Sycamore Creek and the Hursts had to leave their farm. After much searching, the Hurst family purchased land near Mosheim in Greene County, where Stanley grew up working on the farm. Stanley graduated from Greeneville High School in 1944, and married Camilla Solomon in 1946. After working on various construction jobs including helping build Hartman’s Chapel E.U.B. Church, and working for Pet Milk Company, Stanley began working for Kraft Foods in 1956. He transitioned from construction to working in the Kraft plant in Greeneville, and then was promoted to the engineering department in Garland, TX in 1968 where he became an area engineer, installing and maintaining equipment at Kraft plants around the country. In 1971, the Hursts moved to Springfield, MO where he spent the remainder of his long career with Kraft. Stanley retired from full-time work with Kraft in 1988, but continued working for several years thereafter, first as a consultant for Kraft, then in the tools department of a local Sears store, and finally as a supervisor on several Habitat for Humanity building projects. After 42 years in Springfield, the Hursts moved back to Greeneville in 2013.

Throughout their lives, Stanley and Camilla were active in Methodist churches, in Tennessee, Texas, and Missouri. Schweitzer United Methodist Church in Springfield, MO was their church home for almost 40 years. Stanley worked on numerous volunteer construction projects with Methodist missions and Habitat for Humanity in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Cuba as well as at various locations around the U.S. Stanley was a devoted father and family man. An avid reader, he was interested in everything from astronomy to politics. A master gardener and skilled craftsman, Stanley had a very productive vegetable garden for years and made dulcimers, furniture, and toys for his extended family in the large shop that he built at his home in Springfield.

Stanley Hurst was preceded in death by his parents, his ten siblings, and his beloved daughter Linda Hurst Locke. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Camilla, by his daughter Betty and her husband Steve Davidowski of Marshall, NC, by his daughter Nancy and her husband Harold Delaney of Albuquerque, NM, and by son-in-law Joe Reeves Locke, Jr.; by grandchildren Benjamin Hurst (and Megan) Delaney of Boulder, CO, Sarah Kathleen (and Ty) Camp of Albuquerque, NM, and Jesse David (and Nicole) Delaney of Fayetteville, AR, and by great grandchildren Caleb and Stella Delaney, Jonah and James Camp, and Abram Delaney.

Visitation will be Friday, December 2 at the Kiser Rose Hill Funeral Home, 125 Idletime Drive, in Greeneville from 4 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.. The funeral service will be at Hartman’s Chapel Methodist Church, 3497 Old Kentucky Road, near Mosheim at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 3.
