He had been employed for 28 years by Food City, where he was assistant manager of the bakery.
He was a former volunteer fireman in the DeBusk community.
Rodney loved to bake, and he always had a smile on his face. If anyone had a bad day, Rodney was sure to make your day better with his great sense of humor.
He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend.
Survivors include his mother: Barbara Jean Hammit of Afton; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Karen and Michael Penley of Greeneville, and Sandra Hammit of Jonesborough; two brothers and a sister-in-law: Roger Smith of Greeneville, SSgt. Lester "Paul" and Geneva Ann Smith of Johnson City; several aunts, uncles and cousins; nieces: Ashley Hurd, and Jeanne Baker and fiancé, Jonathan McClain; nephews: Cody Baker and fiancée, Nicole Ostrander, and Josh Baker and fiancée, Samantha Johnson; stepnephews: Matthew Buckner, Larry White III, and Tommy White; a stepniece: Tina Vance; great-nieces and great-nephews: Aiden McClain, Madison McClain, Makyla Gross, Micha Gross, Landon Baker, Braiden Baker and McKenzie Baker; and special friends: Avery Close and dear friend, Kay Shipley, Sam and Missy Powers, Ralph Gross, John Trammel and all associates, current and past, of Food City.
The family extends a special thanks to all the managers and employees of Food City and also to the kind staff of Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel.
The Rev. Dale Shelton will officiate.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, off Snapps Ferry Road.
Pallbearers will be Paul Smith, Cody Baker, Josh Baker, Jonathan McClain, Ralph Gross, Josh Riddle and Stan Pinnel.
