Robert "Bob" Atherton, 66, of the Walkertown community, died Monday at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Atherton was a retired carpentry worker.
He was a member of Bridges Chapel Church of God.
Mr. Atherton was a 12-year veteran of the U.S. Navy. A retired master sergeant, he served in the Vietnam War from 1970-71.
On Friday, he was presented the Order of the Silver Rose Medal, which is presented to Vietnam veterans who were harmed by "Agent Orange" during the war.
Mr. Atherton was a member of Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Cancer Society.
Survivors include his wife of 15 years: Mary "June" Atherton; two daughters and sons-in-law: Bobbie Jean and Gordan Graham of Morristown and Tonya and Glenn Gilbert of Greeneville; three stepdaughters and two stepsons-in-law: Becky and Kevin Shelton, Angie and Leighton Byrd, and Hope Turner, all of Greeneville; six grandsons: Jordan Gilbert, Caleb Gilbert, Douglas Shelton, Garrett Byrd, Zachary Pike, and Matthew Lane; a brother and sister-in-law: Larry and Patty Atherton of Evansville, Ind.; his mother-in-law: LaRue B. Warden of Afton; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Christie and Tim Dowdy and Jessie and Clay Barber, all of Greeneville; several nieces and nephews; a special aunt and uncle: Bob and Mary Walling of Evansville; a special cousin: Linda Rustin of Evansville; and a number of special friends and neighbors, including special friends, Charles Turner and the "Turner Clan."
He was a son of the late Robert T. and Kathryn Atherton.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 8 o'clock in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Clarence Gammill will officiate.
A committal service will be held at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning in Mount Zion Cemetery on Snapps Ferry Road. The Greene County Honor Guard and DAV will conduct a military graveside service.
Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10 o'clock to travel in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Clay Barber, Tim Dowdy, Matthew Lane, Douglas Shelton, Larry Mullins, Hugh Seaver, Charles Turner, and Leighton Byrd.
Honorary pallbearers will be the nurses and staffs of Caris Hospice and 4-East, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Dr. Dharmen Patel and staff, and Dr. Sonya Woods and staff.
