Mrs. Steele was retired from Philips Consumer Electronics and was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW.
She attended Mt. Hebron UMC as long as her health permitted.
Her grandchildren were one of the most important aspects in her life. She was greatly treasured by her two daughters. Mary’s warm smile, compassion and grace made her a pleasure to be around and she was loved by many.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years: James Steele; daughters and one son-in-law: Judy Fox of Greeneville and Sandi and Eddie Bible of Afton; three grandchildren: Holly Marshall and husband Josh, Jacob Bible, and Michala Fox; sister and brother-in-law: Sue Ella and Henard Myers; brother: Billy Johnson; caregiver: Kathy Fellers; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; sisters-in-law: Rosie Steele, Leo Steele, Dema Reel, Judy Johnson, and Linda Johnson; and brother-in-law: Bob Steele of Afton.
She was the daughter of the late James “Buck” and Lottie Crumley Johnson and was preceded in death by three brothers: James Johnson, Lewis Johnson, and Herbert Johnson; and a special niece: Amy Johnson.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8pm Saturday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3pm Sunday, December 29, 2013, in Kiser-Rose Hill Chapel with Rev. Steve Tuck and Mike Hensley officiating.
Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Sam Mashburn, Scott Humphreys, Wayne Miller, Bobby Johnson, Steve Darnell, Nick Johnson, and Billy Joe Brown.
Honorary pallbearers will be the staff of Smokey Mountain Hospice, Dr. Michael Hartsell and staff, Sam Seaton, Charles Shipley, and Billy Shipley.
