Mary Axie Painter Shelton Nelson

Axie and her husband, Bob, were owners and operators of Gravel Hill Dairy Farm.

She was a faithful member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church.

She was a loyal wife, dedicated mother, giving sister and a true friend.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years: Bob Nelson; a son: Richard Lee Shelton of Jonesborough; grandsons: Dustin Shelton of Limestone, Jonathan Shelton of Jonesborough, Alex Shelton of Greeneville; granddaughters: Kaci Warren of Florida and Madelyn Hill of Telford; stepson: Sam Nelson and wife, Melissa; stepdaughter: Sharon Rush and husband, Mike; step-grandson: Brandon Nelson, step-granddaughter: Emma Kate Nelson; sisters: Elizabeth (Gene) Thompson, Linnia Painter (Roger Jessee),Virginia Fellers (Donnie Woods); brother: Johnny Painter (Jason); sisters-in-law: Charlotte (Herman) Tutton, Geraldine (Bill) Ball, and Maxine (Howard) Saults; brother-in-law: Kenneth Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was the daughter of the late Ferrin and Ruth Wyatt Painter and was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Nelson; six brothers: Willis Shanks, Charles Mathes, Walter Painter, Roy Painter, Howard Painter and Warren Allen Painter; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, John and Edith Nelson.

The family will receive friends 4-7 pm Tuesday at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and at other times at the home.

Following visitation, the funeral service will be held at 7 pm Tuesday at the church. Rev. Richard Mullan and Michael Brown will officiate.

Interment will be 12 pm Wednesday at Liberty Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bradley Thompson, Darrell Shanks, Don Graham, Billy Ball, PJ Shelton, Wade Mathes, CJ Mathes, Nick Mathes and Charles Allen Painter.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cleve Painter, Mark Shanks, Jason Shanks, Charles Nelson, Kenny Nelson, TA Wilson, Eddie Thompson and Ernie Thompson.
