

Mr. Southerland was retired from Norfolk Southern Railway and was a Baptist by faith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany. He was also a member of V.F.W. Post #1990.
He is survived by his wife: Joann Southerland; two daughters and a son-in-law: Dr. Crystal Mae Southerland of Greeneville, Lisa Diane and Arthur W. Stair III of Kingsport, Tennessee; two grandchildren: Jazmine Frances Stair and A. Winfield Stair IV of Kingsport; twin brother and sister-in-law: Clarence and Charlotte Southerland of Greeneville; brother and sister-in-law: J.R. and Geraldine Southerland of Johnson City; three sisters: Loraine M. Slimp of Knoxville, Malta L. Hunt of Chuckey, and Marilyn L. Blevins of Greeneville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Georgia Southerland, Ollie and Tommy Sheffey, Pauline and Charles Cansler, James and Annette Cruey, and Kenneth Blevins; and several nieces and nephews.
He was a son of the late Alfred L. and Susan Frances Waddell Southerland and was preceded in death by two brothers: Ralph E. Southerland and Clinton R. Southerland; and three sisters: Ruby K. Corby, Leeoma M. Ware, and Hazel M. Blevins.
The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jim Fain officiating. Interment will follow in GreeneLawn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers are Alfred Southerland, Tony Sheffey, Teddy Sheffey, Billy Hunt, Larry Hunt, Kevin Slimp, Benjamin Ware, and Scott Dykes. Honorary Pallbearers are Benny Glover, doctors and staff of the fifth floor at Johnson City Medical Center, and his fellow co-workers at Norfolk and Southern Railway.
VISITATION: The body is at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
