John Aldon Cox, 80, died on December 13 of complications from the COVID-19 virus. He is
survived by his wife, Candace; sons Kerry, Brian, and Jeffrey; step-daughter Christina
Orgeron; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, and a brother, Glenn. He was
preceded in death by his parents, John Christensen Cox and Mozelle Houtz Cox, and a
brother, Neil.
John's family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff in ICU
at Greeneville Community Hospital East for their extraordinary care and compassion
during his illness.
Per John's wishes, there will be no memorial service, and interment will be out-of-state. A gathering for friends will be held when it is warm and safe to congregate.
John received a B.A. in Agricultural Entomology, with minors in Chemistry and
German, from Utah State University; a B.A. in English Literature from The Evergreen
State College; and a teaching certificate in English/ American Literature from Boise State
University.
The bulk of John's career was spent as a Public Health Advisor for the CDC
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) where he held assignments in numerous
locations, both domestic and abroad, including Luanda, Angola, where he
established the first Global AIDS Program [GAP] in post-conflict Angola. John also
held short-term assignments with the World Health Organization [WHO] as part of its
STOP initiative [Stop the Transmission of Polio] in Ghana and the Philippines.
Domestically, John worked in the CDC's tuberculosis and STD programs.
Assignment locations included Atlanta, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Los Angeles, New
Orleans, Baltimore, and Berkeley.
Post-retirement, John enjoyed working in his yard and garden and keeping up with his many friends around the world through letters and post cards.
