The family of Sally Jean Sunkel announces her peaceful passing on the evening of Sunday, October 8th, 2023. She was born to Helen and Frank Elrod on December 31, 1934 and was raised on her family’s farm in eastern Putnam County.
Sally graduated from Stilesville High School and went on to obtain a degree in teaching from Purdue University. She met Richard “Dick” Sunkel at the Windy Hill Country Club and they were happily married on July 11, 1959 at her family’s home.
Sally taught Home Economics prior to raising her two sons, Dan and Doug. Sally was actively involved in the community of Greencastle. She remained a proud lifelong Boilermaker and enjoyed attending Purdue football games with a mandatory stop at The (“original”) Pub beforehand.
Sally could often be found playing bridge or golfing with her friends. She was an avid cross stitcher and baker, spoiling her loved ones with baked goods (particularly Christmas Tree cinnamon rolls). Sally will be remembered for her sarcastic wit, her generous gifts, and her delicious meals.
Saddened by their loss and cherishing fond memories are her youngest son, Doug; her daughters-in-law Marsha and Helen; her sister and nephew, Mary Jane and Norman Simmons; her grandchildren, Gwen, Maggie, Ben, Claire, Rich, and Scotlyn; and her great-grandchildren, Hunter, Parker, Ellie, Elliott, and Scarlett.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Helen; her husband, Richard; and her eldest son, Dan.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service to honor the life of Sally at 1pm on Friday, October 13th near the mausoleum in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial gifts to the Putnam County Foundation.
