Born October 19, 1930 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Elmer Schoenfeld and Blanche (Range) Verdone. Lee was a graduate of South Division High School “Class of 1949” in Milwaukee. He attended the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship, received his bachelor’s degree in Education and Biology from Luther College in Decorah, IA, and his Master’s Degree from Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH.
He was a United States Army veteran serving from 1952 to 1954, which included time spent in Korea during the Korean War.
A Professor and Coach throughout his life, Lee worked at Ripon College and retired from DePauw University, where he taught and coached wrestling, golf and football for 23 years. Upon retirement, he continued coaching, helping with the Greencastle High School swim team. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Greencastle.
For more than 30 years Lee’s summers were spent in Ely, MN, where he was affectionately known as “Coach” and served as Assistant Director of Camp Voyageur, a wilderness camp for boys 10-18 years old. Along with Camp Voyageur, Lee most loved time spent with his family and he particularly enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren in their various sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Suzann Evans Schoenfeld; sister, Joyce Smet; beloved aunt, Dorothy Hanson; and special cousin Ronald Reineck.
Lee is survived by his son, Eric (Elizabeth) Schoenfeld; daughter, Leah (Stephen) Foutty; and seven grandchildren, Matt (Maria) Schoenfeld, Chris (Margaret) Schoenfeld, Meredith (Mirza) Somun, Nathan Schoenfeld, Charlie Foutty, Joey Foutty, and Ana Foutty.
A private memorial graveside service will be held at the Brick Chapel Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle, IN.
