He was born October 28, 1932 in Brazil, the son of William E. and Elsie (Deal) Wallace.
Joe retired as a Captain of Greencastle Police Department in 1979. During his years with the police department, he promoted several programs for kids, including the St. Jude Bike-a-thon, sending several thousands of dollars to St. Jude Hospital. He also hosted several “Fishing Rodeos” for children, with various awards presented to the children.
He had previously worked at Schultz’ Family Store, Montgomery Wards, G.C. Murphy’s, and sold insurance for Empire Life. He was a member of First Christian Church, Sons of the American Legion, Putnam County Coin Club, FOP, and had been attending First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty J. (Keyt) Wallace, whom he married on December 25,1952, their children, John J. (Vanessa) Wallace and Teresa (Jeff) Rigdon; grandchildren, Jeffery J. (Ashley) Wallace, Alicia (Sean) Stearley, Kelsey Rigdon & fiancé’, Cody Long, Nate Rigdon, and Katie Rigdon; great grandchildren, Courtney and Braden Wallace, Kalvin and Kyle Stearley, and Weston Long ; a brother, Jerry (Joan) Wallace; brothers-in-law, Bill (Joan) Keyt and Melvin Keyt; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Noble and Verna Wallace; sister-in-law, Norma Russell and niece, Patty Clampitt.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at the Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with interment to follow at the Clinton Falls Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 AM on Thursday, until time of service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Joe Wallace to the Alzheimer’s Association.
