Born March 16, 1931 in Greencastle, he was the son of Roy and Helen (Klebusch) Ash, and a graduate of Greencastle High School “Class of 1949” John was a United States Army veteran, having served with the 42nd Engineers.
John was employed with IBM for 32 years, retiring in 1987. He had previously worked with his family in construction. After his retirement he worked as a timber estimator, he loved the woods, especially the planting and growing of trees, having in his lifetime, planting 16,000 trees by hand.
John was a member of the Brick Chapel United Methodist Church; Forrester Club, Lifetime member of the American Legion, and member & past president of the Greencastle Alumni Association.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Libby” (Minnick) Ash; sons, Gary (Kathy) Canada and Larry (Bobbi) Canada, brother Joe (Loretta) Ash, twin brother, Gene (Shirley) Ash; grandchildren, Chris (Sheilia) Canada, Debbie Canada (Bob) Williams, Gabriel (Bethany) Canada, Chad (Sandra) Canada, Zack (Kelly) Canada, and Jud (Emily) Canada; 12 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eddie Ash; and sister, Edna Cook.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at the Brick Chapel United Methodist Church, 3547 N. US. Hwy 231 Greencastle. Interment with military honors will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until time of service at church.
