Jerry W. Mann passed away on Thursday, January 03, 2013 at his home in Greencastle with his wife by his side. He was born on December 16, 1943 in Hattiesburg, Miss to Gertrude and Fred Amacher. After the death of his father on August 8, 1944, his mother married Leonard Mann, who adopted Jerry and was a loving step-father. Jerry was a life long member of the Amity Baptist Church, where he served many offices over the years. He most recently attended First Baptist Church in Greencastle, after moving to Greencastle in 2008.
Jerry was a farmer, a truck driver, both for Roadway Trucking Company and himself in his own trucking company. He later was employed by and retired from the State of Indiana Department of Corrections as a Water Treatment Operator.
Jerry graduated from Cloverdale High School “class of 1961”. He attended both Hanover and Indiana State Universities.
He married Patricia (Nissen) in 1993. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Dawn (Jim) Brewer of Lawrenceville, IL and Deborah (Jamie) Steffy of Cloverdale; one son, David Mann of Clayton; two step-children, Melodie (Jim) Richardson of Danville, and David (Tina) Nissen of Fillmore; three grandchildren, Drew, Alex, and Evan Steffy; eight step grandchildren, Jennifer and Jessica Jones, Kristina, Kaitlynn, and Jacob Nissen, and Nancy, Marianne, and John Richardson; a brother, Fred (Linda) Mann of Cloverdale; one step –brother, Kenneth Mann of Florida; a step-sister, Lenora (Dell) Fossum, of Decorah, IA. And a sister-in-law, Linda (Wendell) Sommers of Plainfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-brothers, Richard and Gordon Mann.
For several years Jerry enjoyed flying his Cessna Airplane and traveling in his motor home. The last four years Jerry spent the winter months in southern Texas, where he had many friends. He was in the choir and was the song leader for special events at the Texas RV Park.
Jerry could be seen all summer in the Cloverdale area mowing with his Dixie Chopper. He enjoyed mowing and did so for the past 35 years. As well as his family Jerry is survived by his Cocker Spaniel, “Harley”, who was always by his side.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 7, 2013 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home with Rev. Robert HIne officiating. Interment will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, January 6th at the funeral home.
