Vivian was born June 18, 1930 on a dry-land homestead in Willard, Colorado to Phocion and Vivian Isola (Meek) Bryen. Vivian, whose parents called her "Nita", attended Willard (Section) School until 1941. She then moved to Fort Morgan, Colorado with her family where she completed her education, graduating from Fort Morgan High School in 1948. During those years she chose to go by her first name, Vivian.
Vivian married her high school sweetheart, Carroll J. Nickle, whom she had known throughout most of her early years in school and church, on December 26, 1948. After their marriage, they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana while Carroll served in the Air Force until September 1949. After Carroll's honorable discharge from the Air Force, they returned to Fort Morgan and started their family. They moved to Greeley in 1953, where they lived until Carroll's work took him to Denver in 1978. They returned to Greeley in 2012.
Vivian was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fort Morgan, Greeley and Denver and also attended Wellshire Presbyterian in Denver. She served in many capacities in the churches she attended, enjoyed visiting home-bound church members and volunteered in various service organizations. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, baker and candy maker (she loved chocolate!). She enjoyed entertaining and traveling by car with Carroll in the Colorado mountains and throughout the United States and also enjoyed some special overseas excursions. In her later years, she enjoyed lots of reading, chocolate (!) and was always grateful for her many blessings and memories.
She was an amazing, loving example to family and friends; positive and encouraging; and had a way of bringing a smile to the hearts of all who provided for her care and visited her. She was deeply loved and admired by her family as a quiet hero and "wind beneath their wings".
Vivian was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Foi; and sisters, Leca Knox and Florence Swopes. She is survived by her children, John (Sharon) Nickle of Colorado Springs, and Connie (Rich) Davis of Greeley; grandchildren, Eric and Tyler Nickle, Heather Davis, and Kelly (Mike) Kelly.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor her memory may do so by contributing to the Tennyson Center for Children, 2950 Tennyson St., Denver, CO 80212; First Christian Church, 2230 13th St., Greeley, CO 80631; or a charity of choice.
