Her family later moved and settled in Colorado where she graduated from Kersey High School in 1949. Shirley married James Flot in 1950. Her and her husband lived in Long Beach, CA while he was active in the U.S. Navy. Later returning to Northern Colorado where they started their family.
As a talented entrepreneur Shirley started Flot Electric with her husband and grew their business over the next several years. She also opened a Beauty Salon with her father which had two locations, including one on the campus of the University of Northern Colorado. She and her father later invested in real estate in Greeley.
Shirley also worked at the First National Bank of Greeley, Elks Club, and Austin & Austin Real Estate as an accountant.
In February of 1976 Shirley married her best friend and love of her life, John Allison. They enjoyed travelling, spending time with family and friends, camping with grandkids in the Rocky Mountains, and watching the Colorado Rockies.
Throughout the years she grew her real estate venture with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law owning and renting several properties over the next several decades. As a strong advocate and ambassador for education Shirey worked for the National, Colorado, and Greeley Education Association for 30 years and retired in 2001.
Her talents as an entrepreneur continued throughout her life. She found great pleasure in working alongside her daughter and granddaughter in their flower shop from 1999 until they sold the business in 2005.
Socializing with family and friends always brought great joy to Shirley. As a member of two Red Hat Society chapters and the Shirley’s Club of Greeley she stayed active and looked forward to every event with her “sisters.”
Shirley was the heart of her family. She enjoyed playing cards, board games, live music and dancing, fine dining, attending the theater, and celebrating with loved ones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, John; brother, Dice McKnight; and; sister, JoAnn Trostel.
Survived by her daughter Linda and son-in-law Bill Scott; son, Jamie Flot and his partner, Jorgi McNamara. Five grandchildren, Anthony Scott; Kelly Scott Raisley; Jim Scott; Joseph (Kenzie) Flot; Jared (Kelsey) Flot. Five great-grandchildren Bri Scott; Stella and Grace Raisley; Calvin and Campbell Flot. Sister, Verla Kingsley; brother-in-law, Bob Allison; and sister-in-law Pam (Wanye) Roitsch.
A Visitation for Shirley will be held Monday, January 15, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 p.m., both at Stoddard Funeral Home, 3205 W. 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634. An Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 3400 W. 28th Street, Greeley, Colorado 80634.
