Richard attended Seton Hall High School. On May 15, 1954, he married Loraine Swift, the love of his life for 47 years. He served in the Marine Corps from 1949-1955 and was a veteran of the Korean wars.
Richard worked for the Archdiocese of Newark. He moved to Colorado to be near family in 1993, where he worked at Work Out West. He was a member of Christ Community Church, Union Colony Marines Detachment 1093, Silver Sneakers and Doug Bell’s Running Club.
Richard loved running, among his races are the New York, Boston, Maui, Marine Corps and Denver marathons. In January of 2016 at the age of 85, he ran the Carlsbad half marathon with his daughter, Linda. He loved to travel with his wife. His favorite trip was to Ireland with his son, Michael. He loved the mountains and climbed his first 14er at the age of 60. Richard competed in the Colorado Senior Games and held state records in his age group. Richard and his wife took guardianship and raised his brother’s five children, upon his brother’s death, Edward, Robert, Kevin and Dennis Burns and Kathy Buchanan.
Richard is survived by daughters, Karen Green and Linda Davis Watt; sons, Michael Edward Burns and Steven Allen Burns; grandchildren, Dave Kleinman, John Green, Stephan Davis and Mary Davis and great-grandchildren, Brianne, Holdan, Addie and Callie Kleinman and Marleigh McLean Davis.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Loraine, brother, Edward Burns and parents.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Work Out West, 5701 West 20th Street, Greeley.
