Max graduated from College High School in Greeley and subsequently moved to Hollywood California where she attended dental assistant school. She then returned to Greeley in 1958 and began work as a dental assistant. While socializing at the hot spot known as the "dizzy block" in Greeley, she met her future husband, Lynn Hurt, who enlisted in the US Navy soon thereafter and was relocated to San Diego. The couple married in 1961 and settled briefly in San Diego until Lynn was sent to Japan and Max moved back home awaiting his return. In 1965 the couple purchased their lifetime home in Greeley and in March of 1966 their only child David Lynn Hurt was born.
Lynn made a life as an independent long haul truck driver and spent much of his time on the road supporting the family while Max made a full-time job of raising David. In the process they formed a special bond beyond mother and son and became truly best friends. A gifted and competitive softball player, she took David to games and tournaments with her where she won numerous championships and MVP awards. Later in life she became the first inductee into the Colorado USSSA Softball Hall of fame. She had a passion for beautiful flowers and gardening and was a cherished member of the Happy Life Gardens greenhouse team for many years. It was obvious that this was more fun than work for her. She also did seasonal work for Stephanie's Chocolates, Common Scents Candles, and Hickory Farms. She and Lynn lovingly supported David's passion for medicine and were incredibly proud when he received his medical degree specializing in Dermatology.
Max's friends and family cherished her perennially positive attitude, quick wit, ready laugh, and inexhaustible passion for checking in with everyone and sending a card for every conceivable occasion. Unbeknownst to most she was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2009 and quietly and bravely endured a multitude of treatments to successfully keep it in remission. Her favorite place on earth was Maui where she celebrated her 84th birthday on a family trip in March. Upon return she contracted and conquered Covid, but developed an infection which ultimately claimed her life within a very short time. She passed away at Banner Health in Greeley with her beloved "grand dogs" Austyn, Romy, and Hattie (Yorkshire Terriers) in her arms and Lynn, David, and son in law Scott by her side. She is survived by her husband, Lynn M. Hurt, son Dr. David L. Hurt and his husband Scott Coors, and her younger brother Monte Schmidt and his wife Ann, niece Darby Wheeler, nephew Grant Schmidt, and the MaryAnn and Lee Ruybal family who were truly family to her. She was predeceased by her brother Larry Schmidt and sister Sally Jo Ashby both of whom she cherished.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to either of her favorite charities, St Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. A celebration of her life is tentatively planned in Denver on July 9, 2023. Please visit AllnuttGreeley.com for details and updates to services.
