Who can describe the profound worth of a selfless woman? Mary Angela (Garcia) Conde (“Angie”) entered eternity on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at home with her family in Greeley, Colorado. She was a woman chosen by God to be rich in faith with unfeigned kindness and strength in weakness.
Angie’s generous and kind heart connected with her husband, Robert (“Bob”) Conde, Sr., for more than sixty years. Although money was hard-earned for many of those years, she blessed others with her genuine love, faithfulness, and sense of humor. Her death, like her life, was a beautiful testimony of God’s enduring love through adversity and success.
Angie was born December 14, 1944, in Rosenburg, Texas, the fourth child born to Pablo Garcia and Rosalia Cavasos. They moved to Brule, Nebraska, in 1955 when Angie was ten years old. Out of necessity, at age twelve, she helped to raise her four younger siblings.
Angie met her husband at a dance in Sterling, Colorado, in 1963 where the “handsome young man from Colorado” first asked her to dance after encouragement from her cousins. On February 27, 1965, Angie married Bob. Barely into their twenties, they were filled with happiness and hope for the future together. After her first two children were born, they moved to northeast Colorado where she gave birth to six more children. She later said that she loved being pregnant.
Angie discovered her gift for feeding people when she opened a small diner in Brush, Colorado, in 1971. The diner was attached to a Husky truck stop owned by Bob. Although the diner and truck stop succumbed to the oil crisis of the 1970s, Angie opened three other restaurants in the 1980s and 90s in Sterling and Greeley. The “Momma Conde’s” restaurants served Mexican food that were Angie’s own recipes. Delicious food became a central part of her ministry to others. She fed homeless people and anyone who was hungry through church outreaches and at regular gatherings.
Angie loved Jesus wholeheartedly. She shared him openly with people she met. She loved learning the Hebrew roots of her faith, and she helped draw her friends closer to God.
During the farm years, Angie sometimes worked in the fields, and she worked as a manager at the Safeway grocery stores in Sterling. She later enjoyed working as a bank teller in Greeley before retiring.
While raising her children, she often sang country and folk songs from the 1950s and 60s. Her children loved hearing her silky voice beautify the classic ballads. She competitively played cards and board games. She was the family’s undisputed Scrabble® champion until the grandkids came along.
Angie was very social. She adored her family and friends, and she cherished time with them. She looked forward to gatherings with extended family and church family and enjoyed meeting new people. There were many kind souls with whom she shared a kindred spirit at different seasons of her life.
Her generous spirit continually evinced magnanimity by the benefactions of her heart through food, gifts, and time. Through the years, she and Bob invited many people in severe need to stay with them until they got back on their feet. She had a keen sense of justice. She defended the weak, and she spoke for those with no voice.
Angie’s family loved her deeply, among whom are her husband, Robert Conde, Sr., of Greeley, Colorado, her children: Ted Conde (Kathy) of Damascus VA; Belinda McKenna (Dennis) of Greeley; Robert Conde, Jr. (Donna) of Loveland; Melissa Holland (Cory) of Urbandale IA; Theresa Conde of Aurora; Victoria Conde of Aurora; and Jaclyn Holien of Greeley. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, brothers Raymond, Nestor, Frank, Joseph, and John, sisters Mercedes and Candi, and a plethora of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Angie was preceded in death by her parents, Pablo Garcia and Rosalia Cavasos, brother Maximo Garcia, sister Clara Erlewine, son Richard Eric Conde, and grandson Gabriel David Conde.
A celebration of Angie’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the Evans Community Complex banquet hall, 1100 37th Street, Evans, Colorado 80620.
