Kay was born on December 19, 1943 in Windsor Colorado to Raymond and Nellie Amen (Wickham). She was raised on a farm in Johnstown and attended school in Johnstown.
In 1962 Kay attended college at CSU where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She later returned to the farm where she worked with her dad for many years feeding cattle.
In 1967 she married David Dee Wailes and they had three children: David, Kelly and Michael.
In August 1981 she married Conrad Dewalt and they shared a wonderful life until his death in 2005.
At her high school reunion, she re-connected with Kenneth Schwalm and on June 26, 2007 they were married. They celebrated 15 years this summer. They enjoyed many years of travel together and were never far from each other.
She was a member of Resurrection Fellowship in Loveland Colorado.
Kay was the only living child of Ray and Nellie. She spent her adolescent time traveling with her mom to visit relatives and traveling with her dad to Walden to move cattle from summer pastures to winter lots. Because she was an only child her cousins were a great blessing to her, and she enjoyed when they would come and spend the summer with her. Kay’s greatest joy was to be on the farm with her family close by. She was her dad’s right-hand man for many years, and they had a great partnership. She had an immense love for animals and was rarely without a pet in her life.
She is survived by her husband Kenneth Schwalm of Johnstown; children David Wailes of Johnstown, Kelly and Mike Gardner of Johnstown, Michael Wailes and Nicole Duprey of Johnstown; grandchildren, Madison Wailes of Greeley, Kelly and Danielle Gardner of Johnstown, Scott Gardner of Loveland, Markus Gardner of Johnstown and Ella Duprey-Wailes of Johnstown. Great grandchildren Luke, Brock and Garrett Gardner of Johnstown.
