Joe grew up in the Kersey and Weld County areas. On October 28, 1949 he married Viola Romero in Johnstown. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnstown.
Joe served in the military for 2 years. He worked for many farmers in the Milliken/Johnstown area and for Great Western Sugar Factory in Johnstown. He then went to work for Great Western Railroad until he retired in 1982.
Joe was known as “Hub Cap Joe” because of his collection of hubcaps. He loved old cars, motorcycles and salvaging scrap. He was always ready to help anyone who needed help.
Joe is survived by his daughters, JoAnn Montano (Pat) of Longmont, Connie Martinez (Robert) of Johnstown and Paula Medina (Ben) of Greeley; sons, Mike Hernandez (Cathy) of Greeley and Joseph Hernandez of Milliken; 20 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, John David Hernandez and infant son, Joseph Hernandez.
Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Saturday followed by Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 p.m. both at Stoddard Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
