Today marks 3 years since my younger brother Jim passed away.  

Despite the challenges of COVID, I managed to be with him in the hospital that night when he took his last breath. I was not able to leave the hospital due to a heavy snow storm. I slept on the floor in an office until morning and drove back to Jim's home to take care of matters for Jim, with the remote help of my brother Larry, who could not make it to Colorado. It was difficult going through his stuff, but  also rewarding in that I got to learn about Jim, what he did professionally, his impact on friends, and how he lived an honorable life. I learned a lot about my little brother through his stuff, friends, and co-workers. I became friends with his friends.

Jim, you were taken from us too soon. You made a difference and I am proud to be your brother.

I've had the opportunity to live in Jim's house for the past month and learn about his life here in Greeley, CO. Jim was well respected by his friends and co-workers. I am proud of our brother for his integrity, his caring of others, his personal example in the face of adversity, and his commitment to doing the right thing.

His house is a reflection of his personality: creative, innovative, meticulous, playful, and cheap. Many projects were pretty ingenious, jury-rigged with minimal expense, and they all work reliably.

He wrote everything down. He used a Day-Timer/Franklin to document everything. Every year of his Day-Timer, back to when they started Day-Timer I think, was in a neat folder in a box. He had notes all over the house to Pray, how to work the washer/dryer/dish washer, how to work the sprinkler system he installed himself, where the pipes leaked (all the leaks are fixed), directions to friend's houses, etc.

I could tell he was in a lot of pain, physically and mentally. And, that he worked through that pain, not giving up, leaning on his friends, and self-commitment to getting better. His faith was evident through-out the house. 

He had some impressive awards for work, music and baseball accomplishments. The awards were not displayed, but in boxes, dusty, on an obscure shelf in the basement.

He always had his clipboard with him, taking notes, moving on to the next project. I noticed this when he stayed with our Dad for a month after Mom passed away last year. Jim was the one who helped Dad through that fist month. He kept track of everything.

There's a lot more that I learned that I can add to later. 

For now, I'd like to say that Jim was ready for "The next Project," that he is free of the pain and fatigue that cancer brought, and that he lived a life and had the Faith to enter God's Kingdom.

Jim came to my house often to enjoy the incredible dinners my parents prepared for us. Every time he walked through the door, I would get down into a sumo wrestler type pose to greet him. He would consistently do the pose in return. Jim is an inspiration to me and always will be through his memory.

Jim and I both worked at CDOT; Jim was assigned to Region 4 and I was assigned to Staff Bridge in Denver.  For as long as I care to remember, there has always been a "them vs us" problem with this division of resources that has not always ended well.  Not the case with Jim.

Jim was always easy to get along with, level headed, respectful and kind to others, knowledgeable in his area of expertise and never ever bragged making it easy to work with him.  This being the case, I always looked forward to projects that Jim was assigned to.

When Jim retired, I looked forward to sharing time with him.  We got together for a few dinners before he got sick, and then he was gone at age 58.  As the saying goes, "the good die young" to be with our Lord.  Miss you Jim.

Jim and I met while attending the University of North Texas.  We shared many years and adventures.  We enjoyed music, skiing, and hiking together. Our travels took us to many beautiful places including Hawaii and parts of Canada. Jim loved his family and friends, making music, and his work. Even though our lives ended up going in separate directions, he remains in my heart and will be forever missed.

Jim was so laid back and easy to be around. He and my wife had a connection from the first time they met. He will be missed in our lives and remembered for ever. 

Jim was my neighbor and friend.  He would stop by and sometimes just chat. I appreciated our visits. He would bring my grandchildren Beanie babies! The kids loved him. Jim was a kind  and thoughtful man.  He never had a negative thing to say about anyone. He was amused by the children because they always made him laugh! So until we meet again...good bye for now Jim. We will miss you dearly! Be at peace. 

I have many great memories of Jim over the years I knew him. 
Working on his cars, furnace, and motorcycle, he was always the easiest customer to get along with. 
Being a guest singer in his band was a special treat for me. I’ll think of him every time I here ‘You May Be Right.’
Lots of laughs and a few tears along the way. I’m better for having known him.

My condolences on Jim’s passing. I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to know Jim for nearly 50 years. What a great person and what an amazing life. I know that words are inadequate at a time like this, but I wanted you to know how very sorry my family is for your loss. Jim always had a big smile and a terrific sense of humor. With deepest sympathy.

Jim and I worked together for many years at CDOT.  Him and I managed the construction of the bridges on HWY 85 by the Monfort Packing plant.  Jim became not only a good co-worker but a good friend.  He's going to be missed.  God Bless!


Jim was a great friend, and a very knowledgeable engineer.  At CDOT,  he was the person I would call, when I had questions about some of the newer roadway-design software.
One of the earlier messages here called him "sweet".  That's the word I would use, too.   He was just a sweet, gentle person, always kind, and a pleasure to be with.  I was looking forward to seeing more of him in his retirement.  I am so sorry he is gone.  My heartfelt condolences to his family.

Jim and I worked on many projects together. I enjoyed being in the field with him, traveling milepost by milepost to be sure the project was in good shape. He made my job easy.  I will miss him. 


Jim was a true blessing in my life. Rest In Peace 

Jim was a very sweet man. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. I am very greatful I had the chance to know him. Rest easy friend.

Jim was a wonderful person and a good friend. He will be missed.

I enjoyed working with Jim at CDOT. He was always very detail oriented and precise. I will miss you Jim RIP.
