Jacob Miller Jr., 91, of Greeley, CO passed away April 13, 2019. He was born, at home, in Kersey, CO January 13, 1928. Jacob graduated from Greeley High School. After graduation, he went to work for a short time at Culligan Water services and Joslins. He worked on a hay grinder in the summer months and in the fall, purchased a truck for hauling hay and corn silage. Jacob went to work for his brother, Conrad, and rented some farm ground and raised his first field of corn in 1947.
Jacob enlisted in the US Navy in 1950 along with his brother Lee and nephew Lester Stroh. They were stationed at the naval base in San Diego, CA. His deployment took him to Japan and around the world. He was later deployed on a destroyer ship to serve in the Korean War. He returned to Norfolk, VA to finish out his tour of duty. When he came home on leave in August of 1951, he married the love of his life, Shirley Kerns. They lived in Norfolk, VA for the duration of his duty.
Once they returned from service in the Navy, he began his farming career in 1954. In 1956, they moved to Ft. Lupton. Their first son, Jake, was born in 1957. In 1958, they moved to a farm east of Gill and in 1963, twins John and Sheryl were born. In 1969, they purchase their own farm, where they continued to farm until they retired in 2006 and moved to Greeley.
He will be deeply missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley; children, Jake (Vicki) Miller, John (Bobbi Sue) Miller and Sheryl (Patrick) Maroney; grandchildren, Jennifer (Tyler) Greenly, Scott (Melissa) Miller, Amy Miller, Steven (Savannah) Weigandt, Seth Weigandt, Stephanie Weigandt, Skyla Miller, and Jade Miller; four great grandsons, Paxon Greenly, Cutler Greenly, Judah Miller, and Ethan Miller; one sister, Bernice Miller. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jacob & Charlotte Miller, 2 brothers, and 8 sisters.
