Helen E. Huwa, age 93, of Rifle, Colorado, previous long time resident of Greeley, Colorado, left behind her earthly home on October 10, 2017 and entered into her heavenly home. Helen was born on September 25, 1924 to John and Katie Baumgartner in Hillrose, Colorado. As a child, the family moved to Prospect Valley, Colorado where Helen grew up on a farm and attended the local public school.
After high school, Helen attended business school in Denver, Colorado. She returned to the Prospect Valley area where she was a substitute teacher and volley ball coach.
On Easter Sunday, April 21st, 1946, Helen and Walter Huwa were married. They began their lives together in Prospect Valley and then moved to Fort Lupton for two years where they owned and operated a grocery store. When they moved back to Prospect Valley, Helen and Walter farmed and had a dairy. During that period of time, Helen also worked as a substitute teacher in the local school system. They moved to Greeley in 1967, where Helen worked as a bookkeeper and then later as a secretary at the University of Northern Colorado in the Math Department for 16 years.
Helen and Walter were active members in their church for many years. She was a church pianist and organist.
Helen is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Harold and Bonnie Reiff, grand-children and great grand children, a sister, Lorraine Witt (Jim) of Nashville, TN, and a large extended family of nephews, nieces and in-laws. She is preceded in death by her husband, Walter.
Funeral services will be held in Greeley, Colorado at the First Church of the Nazarene on October 25, 2017, 10:00AM, with interment following at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
