Fred Allan Tjardes passed away May 6, 2012 of complications after emergency surgery. He was born June 26, 1935 to Harry and Grace (Hartley) Tjardes. Fred was the seventh of eight children and grew up constantly surrounded by humor and love.
On January 7, 1957 Fred married his high school sweetheart Geraldine (Gerre) Rundell. Together they made a home in Greeley and raised four children, Sue, Jayne, Bill and Jill.
Fred received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Colorado State College (now UNC) in Elementary Education and worked for 30 years in School District 6 as a teacher and principal. He may best be remembered for reading to students during lunchtime or giving Chick-O-Sticks on students’ birthdays. Those who knew Fred remember him for his warmth, wisdom, humor, and genuine love of people.
Fred is survived by his wife Gerre; daughters Sue Tjardes of Tacoma, Washington, Jayne Hays (Mike) of Evans, Jill Tjardes-Garcia (Justin) of Greeley; son Bill Tjardes (Amy) of Fort Collins; sisters Jacie Green, Bobbi Reynolds, Midge Zier (Harlan); sisters-in-law Betty Tjardes, Letha Rogers, Irene Betz; grandchildren Kodi and Kelli Hays, Hope, Tagan, and Ryann Garcia, and a baby girl due in September; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends, colleagues and students.
He was preceded by his parents, one sister Marilyn Tjardes, three brothers Harry Jr., Don and Jim, and two brothers-in-law Dale Green and Wayne Reynolds
A celebration of his life will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, May 14, at First Christian Church 13th Street and 23rd Avenue.
