David Hugh Werking passed away peacefully on Friday, January 12, 2017 at TRU Hospice of Northern Colorado. He was born in Glenwood Springs, Colorado on September 19, 1933 to Gerald and Opal (Sultzenburger) Werking. The family lived in several places as Gerald pursued a career as a Colorado Courtesy Patrol officer, finally settling once again in Glenwood Springs. David graduated from Garfield County High School, Colorado A & M (Colorado State University) where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He went on to pursue a dental degree from the University of Kansas City (now University of Missouri -Kansas City). He was commissioned as a captain in the US Air Force Dental Corps and served as a general dentist at Johnson Air Base in Japan, where he met his wife, Clare Milkau, who taught school for the Air Force. They were married in Chicago, Ill. in 1961.
David and Clare returned to Kansas City where David pursued a graduate orthodontist degree, then settled in Greeley in 1963. David pursued his career in orthodontics, treating many people from Greeley, Weld County and eastern Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska in his thirty-plus year career.
David was very civic-minded and enjoyed serving people in other capacities. He began his public service career as a Greeley Jaycee and served in most offices, including president. He was inducted into the Jaycee International Senate. He was a member of Greeley Rotary, with twenty-eight years of perfect attendance. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He served on the Weld County Board of Health and the Weld County Bank board of directors. He served on the Greeley City Council for eight years, four of them as mayor pro tem. He was a representative to the Colorado Municipal League and served as its president. He served the Weld County Dental Association in many capacities, including president and served as president of the Colorado Dental Association. He also enjoyed membership in several dental honorary societies: the Pierre Fauchard Academy, International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists, serving as a regent of the College.
Following his retirement, David obtained a masters degree in public administration from the University of Colorado, Denver. He worked for several years at the Denver VA doing research on the outcomes of cardiac surgery, a job he truly enjoyed.
At home, David loved to cook and collect recipes He loved to garden and was an active member of the North Colorado Daylily Club. He served as president of the Mayfair Green Homeowners Association for many years. He especially enjoyed going to coffee with the ""Geezer (Clare's name) Coffee Group"". He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
David was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of fifty six years, Clare; son Curtis and daughter-in-law Juya; grandsons David and Kai; and brother and sister-in law Don and Nedra Werking and their two sons; as well as numerous cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Greeley.
