Born February 8, 1919
Died September 9, 2015
Clarence Erwin Matheny, first son of Clarence and Lizzie Erwin Matheny, was born in the family home on the farm in Westboro, Atchison County, Missouri. His mother, father, and five siblings were a hard working and loving family who had lots of fun on the farm. They were also a church attending family.
After graduating from Westboro High School, Mac attended Marysville College for a short time but soon returned to work on the 540 acre family farm. He lost interest in farming and left to attend the Aeronautical Institute Trade School learning aircraft sheet metaling. He worked for Boeing Aircraft building B29 bombers but, having a great desire to serve his country, he enlisted in the army and served in Burma and India in WWII.
After being honorably discharged from the service, he worked for an oil drilling company, which brought him to Black Rock, Utah where he met and married Lola Keele from Fillmore, Utah on October 5, 1950. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Mac liked to tell the story of how they met and while they were dancing together, how he looked down into Lola’s eyes and saw stars and was smitten. Five children were born into this family: Patrick, Roger, Chris, Rochelle, and Thomas.
Mac helped bring into production some of the oil wells between Loveland and Denver as well as on Colorado’s eastern plains. In 1959, Mac became a journeyman ironworker and helped build bridges, power plants, and missile silos. In 1977, he went into business for himself starting DFLO (Doors For Large Openings) that made bi-fold doors for airport buildings or hangers.
During the last months of his life, he was cared for at home by his son Roger and Lola, wife of 65 years. The last 2 months, Mac was a patient at the Berthoud Colorado Living Center. Constantly by his side, night and day-24/7, were his wife Lola, son Roger, and daughter Rochelle. They loved Mac with all their hearts.
Survivors include, wife Lola; sons Roger and Patrick; daughter Rochelle Lower and grandchildren Alexa, Austin, Mrs. Mandie Lower (Anthony) Smith, Jolene, and Hyrum. Also two sisters in Missouri, Maralee (Lynn) Prather and Dorothy (Carrol) Green and many nieces and nephews. Deceased include sons Chris E. and Thomas V. Matheny, sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth (Roger) Rasmussen, and two brothers Richard (Rita) and Wendell.
