Betty Jo Ehn of Greeley, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2018, at Grace Pointe in Greeley. She was born on October 8, 1924 in Sterling, Colorado to Russell and Myrtle McCracken. She was raised by her mother and step-father, Frank Casburn MD, and she always considered Frank Casburn her father.
Her early years were spent in Holly and Lamar, Colorado where her step-father was a Physician. After his death, the family moved to Colorado Springs and she graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in 1942. She remained close to her friends from St. Mary’s and they held reunions for over 62 years.
During World War II she did her part for the war effort by working in the Naval Ship Yard in Seattle, Washington. There she met and married Fred L. Schulte in January 1945. He was stationed in Seattle while serving in the Coast Guard. They were the parents of three sons. Mr. Schulte is deceased.
She attended Colorado State College (University of Northern Colorado), earned a teacher certificate and went to graduate school. She taught for a short time and served as the Weld County Superintendent of Schools. She was active in the Greeley community, her Church, and in the political process at the State and local level. Betty Jo was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church since 1947. Her interest in history and research led her to the field of genealogy. She has written several books about her family and in particular her Scottish Clan, “The Irwin’s”. She and her Scottish cousins made several trips to Scotland.
On March 1, 1974 in the Office of Governor John Vanderhoof, she married Clifford R. Ehn. They later had their marriage confirmed at St. Peter’s. She and Clifford spent many happy years traveling, they both had a zest for life, enjoying friends and just being together. Clifford died in April 1998.
She is survived by her three sons: Fred Charles Schulte (Sue) of Naples, Florida; Thomas Lee Schulte (Lorrie) of Kingman, Arizona; John Craig Schulte (Beverly Burbank) of Greeley, Colorado. Two stepsons, Dennis Ehn (Hope) of Newton Centre, Massachusetts and Dean Ehn (Marge) of Boulder, Colorado. Eight grandchildren, six step grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her faithful and trusting friends, Judy Roberts and Verniece Thomas.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, parents and two sisters.
The family would like to thank Betty’s personal caregivers for their compassion and devotion to her care. They would also like to thank the staff at Grace Pointe and Auburn Crest Hospice for their care and assistance.
Memorial services will be held at 9:30 A.M. Thursday, December 13, 2018 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Greeley.
