Barbara graduated from College High School in 1950. She initially worked in the family business as a floral designer at Benson’s Flowers. She married Duane Andrew Hakanson on October 17, 1954, in Greeley. She was a lifelong resident of Greeley and a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Barbara attended the University of Northern Colorado, then called the Colorado State College of Education where she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in biological science. Barbara taught chemistry and physics for over 30 years at Weld Central and Eaton High Schools and retired in 1992.
Barbara was an avid reader. She always had a library book, magazine or newspaper close by. She also enjoyed traveling with her family. After retirement in 1992, Duane and Barbara purchased a motor home and joined the Good Sam and Winnebago Clubs, which brought them on new adventures with new friends. Through the years, Barbara was able to see many parts of the US, Canada and Europe and always cherished those memories.
She was a member of the Assistance League of Greeley, Delta Kappa Gamma and the Weld County Retired School Employees Association. After retirement, Barbara enjoyed volunteering her time by working at the Bargain Box and delivering mail and flowers at the hospital.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Deborah Hakanson Beck; son-in-law, David Beck; granddaughters, Catherine Beck and Carla Beck, of Destrehan, LA.; brother-in-law, Ronald (Francis) Hakanson; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Duane; her parents, Arnold and Catherine Benson; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Due to the current restrictions, a memorial service for Barbara will be held at a later date. A small private service will be held at Allnutt Macy Chapel on May 4, 2020. Barbara will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
