Jeffrey, Harrison, Lowell - I am very sorry for your loss.

I will always remember Susan’s brightness, humor and vibrancy on the many amazing trips we took and the time our families spent together. 

She will be missed.

We shared such a special bond that grew stronger as I became an adult. For so many years, you have been my first phone call every morning on my way to work, and often my last call as I headed home for the day. I could always ask you anything. I could confide in you. You somehow seemed to know every answer to every question I could think of.  You were my first teacher and you inspired me to pursue education and my work in academia. More than anything else, by example you demonstrated love and the importance of family and friends. Oftentimes when someone who knew you met me they’d tell me, “You look so much like your mother!” Usually I would just agree and advance the conversation. Now when someone says that, I know I’ll think lovingly of memories I will cherish forever. I love you to the moon and back, mom.

My friendship with Susan began in elementary school and even though we haven’t been together in a long time, whenever we did get together it was like we were never apart and could catch up from where we left off.
Susan, my twin sister, Ina and I were in the same class through 4th grade at P.S. 181. We spent many wonderful afternoons together after school. I remember baking cookies one time at Susan’s house and we didn’t do a great job with them. You could bounce them off the walls, because they were so hard, but we had so much fun making them. 
We also joined a Girl Scout troop together. We enjoyed all the activities until our leader ran off with our money.  It was a very traumatic experience that we all laughed about in later years. 
I remember Susan had a beautiful singing voice and use to sing at school during many assemblies. 
There are many other memories that are too numerous to share. Thank you Susan for all the good times and fond memories. My condolences to your family. You will be greatly missed by all whose lives were touched by you.

My sister Susan and I have been a team since before this photo was taken!  Our mother Jeanette recognized the power of sisterhood long before it became fashionable and encouraged us not only to be supportive sisters but also to be best friends. The last few years have been challenging ones for my beloved sister and best friend. I have tried my best to be by her side as tests and procedures sometimes provided disappointing results. I love you, Susan.  Life just won’t be the same without you. 

In November 1971, my first teaching assignment was covering 6th grade math classes while Susan was on her honeymoon.  I was handed the honeymooner’s lesson plan book and told by the principal to do the best I could. What impressed me immediately was that Susan was able to wrangle time off in November.  Even more impressive, though, was the lesson plan book she had left for her substitute.  Susan clearly took teaching seriously.  Even I, challenged by math as I was, understood most of what she had written.  After fifty years I still remember—not the math—but the effort Susan put into making sure that even a math-challenged sub would be able to provide meaningful instruction to her classes. 

That was the beginning of my fifty-year relationship with Susan, first as a colleague in Walt Whitman Intermediate School, and then, for much longer, as a friend.  In those fifty years we shared laughter; the joy of family milestones; the sorrow of losses; and lively dinners with Whitman veterans and spouses Stew and Natalie and Barry and Rita.  

If I’ve learned anything during my many decades on this planet, it’s that in order to have good friends you need to be a good friend. Susan modeled friendship through her empathy, love and obvious pleasure that she took in being with those she cared about.  She truly was a card-carrying member of the sisterhood.  

I will miss Susan and honor her by practicing what she taught me.  I will hold her in my heart.
