surrounded by his loving family on September 27th, 2021 at the age of 75 after a
long and courageous battle with Amyloidosis.
Howard was born in Brooklyn, NY to Faye and William Weitzman in 1945 and raised
in Brownsville, and then Laurelton, Queens. He attended Brooklyn Technical High
School and then Queens College where he graduated with an accounting degree. It
was there that he met his wife of 52 years, Susan. They were married in May 1969
and both went on to become CPAs.
Howard started his career in a large accounting firm and quickly realized that he
wanted to make a difference in the healthcare field. He mentored under Harry Sezan
and learned how to maximize hospital reimbursements from Medicare and Blue
Cross. At this time he and his partner Jerry Sloane started their own firm specializing
in tax return preparations and healthcare reimbursements. He continued in the
healthcare field in various capacities and built up a large and diverse accounting
practice until his retirement from the business world in 2000.
Howard and Susan raised their three children, Catherine, Peter and Matthew in
Great Neck Estates where he first became involved in local government, first as a
Village Trustee and then as Mayor of Great Neck Estates from 1989-1995. After
working on Bill Bradley’s presidential campaign, he attended the democratic
convention as a delegate, getting the attention of local democratic leaders. This led
to his nomination and successful campaign as Nassau county comptroller in 2001.
He revelled in his role as “Nassau County’s Fiscal Watchdog” and served as
Comptroller from 2001-2009. He was instrumental in putting Nassau County on firm
financial footing.
Howard loved adventure, and was passionate about wanting to live life to the fullest.
He loved to play racquetball and tennis, to jog and workout, and while he often went
skiing, he hated it... but went anyway so his children would learn. He took his kids on
white water rafting trips and was an avid boater. In order to take his son Peter to
college, he planned a trip to navigate the Erie Canal and Lake Cayuga to arrive at
Cornell University. He also took a trip to pick up his first mate (and son) Matthew at
the University of Vermont and continue on to Montreal. He meticulously planned
countless other adventures, including many trips with his friends at the Shelter Bay
Yacht Club. Once his children finished college, he and his wife Susan traveled all
over the world to visit them from Cambodia, to Australia, to Italy. It was always an
adventure.
Howard had a very profound presence, and an incredible wealth of wisdom and
experience. People often came to him for advice or guidance, and he was always so
generous with his time and energy, helping people in any way he could.
He was courageous in fighting his twelve year battle with Amyloidosis with the help
of an incredible team of doctors and a devoted sister who gave him her kidney. This,
plus the unwavering support of his wife Susan and his own strength and
perseverance allowed him to see the birth of three more grandchildren and to spend
quality time with them. During this period he mentored others who were newly
diagnosed and raised funds for research to find new treatments and a cure.
Howard is survived by his wife Susan, his children Catherine and Scott Diamond,
Peter and Jessica Weitzman, Matthew and Alexa Weitzman; his grandchildren Leo,
Max, Morris and Ema; his sister and brother-in-law Leslie and Edward Kornfeld; and
cousins, nieces & nephews.
