Charles Feldberg, 91 years old, of Palm Beach, Florida, Southampton, New York, and Floral Park, New York, passed away peacefully at home on September 6, 2024. The son of the late Israel and Miriam Feldberg, Charlie was raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts. He met the love of his life, Mickey, at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, carrying her trunk to her dorm room on her very first day on campus. They were married in 1954 and were nearing their 70th anniversary at the time of Charlie’s death.
After earning his degree in food science, Charlie served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps. He went on to work in the food industry, first at Pfizer and then for 35 years at CPC International/Best Foods. As Vice President for Health, Safety and Quality Assurance, Charlie traveled and made friends around the world. He was a noted industry expert on food regulation and safety who published a variety of technical papers; worked closely with several U.N. bodies including the Food and Agricultural Organization; served as U.S. representative to the International Federation of Grocery Manufacturers Associations; and was a fellow of the Institute of Food Technologists.
In 1970, Charlie earned his MBA from Long Island University and, in 2008, he received an honorary Doctor of Science from UMass, which recognized his career achievements and his decades of support to the University. He and Mickey established the Feldberg Scholarship, the top award given each year to a senior Food Science major; he chaired the Food Science Industrial Alumni Advisory Board; and he was a recipient of the UMass-Amherst Distinguished Alumni Award.
Charlie was a long-time congregant at and ardent supporter of Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach and Oakland Little Neck Jewish Center in New York. He loved the beach in Southampton; he never saw a French fry he didn’t love; and, in retirement, he became an accomplished sculptor and glass artist. But he reserved his greatest love and passion for his family, the living embodiment of L’Dor Vador. In addition to his wife, Mickey, he is survived by his three children and their spouses – Steve (Mary Knowles), Robin Wildman (Simon) and Nancy Goldstein (Michael); his seven grandchildren and their spouses – Bryon Nelson (Jessica), Jacqueline Nelson (Ryan Hanrahan), Andrew Goldstein, Rachel Goldstein (Anthony Moreschi), Jason Goldstein (Samantha), Eve Feldberg (Cece Fleury-Feldberg), and Bonnie Feldberg; his three great-grandchildren – Aurora Nelson, Ayla Nelson and Vaughan Hanrahan; and his sister, Lila Rosenbaum. Charlie’s parents predeceased him, as did his brother Leonard and sister-in-law Ruth, along with his brother-in-law Albert Rosenbaum.
Charlie’s funeral will take place on Monday, September 9th - 11:30 AM at Riverside-Nassau North Chapels in Great Neck, New York. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Temple Emanu-El of Palm Beach.
