Helman--Alan. Alan Helman of Port Washington, NY died peacefully on December 29 at home at the age of 97. Born in 1927 in Brooklyn, NY to Goldie and Nathan Helman. After a brief stint in the Navy at the end of World War II, Alan attended and graduated from New York University. Ultimately finding his way into the world of New York City commercial real estate, Alan’s career was a long and fulfilling one where he spent over 50 years at Helmsley-Spear. There he served as an owner’s representative overseeing several properties owned by partnerships led by Harry Helmsley, the legendary real estate investor. He later pivoted his real estate career and became a successful investment sales broker selling buildings primarily throughout Manhattan. Simultaneously, he was active as a real estate investor acquiring numerous office and residential properties, which he maintained a finger on the pulse of until recently. Handsome and elegant, Alan was never seen without a pocket handkerchief peeking out from his breast pocket on his suit. A lifelong sailor adeptly navigating the waters of Manhasset Bay and Long Island Sound, Alan was an extremely kind, engaging and generous gentleman who was always quick to laugh and smile. He had an unwavering positive outlook on life and was unquestionably respected and admired by all who knew him. Predeceased by Florence, his wife of 58 years, and his son Gordon, Alan is survived by his companion Evie Wyman, his daughter Susan (Michael), his son Neil (Betsy) and three grandchildren, Ariel, Benji and Eli.
A funeral service for Alan will be held Friday, January 3, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at The Community Synagogue, 160 Middle Neck Rd, Sands Point, NY 11050. Following the funeral service will be a committal service from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Mount Hebron Cemetery, 130-04 Horace Harding Expy, Flushing, NY 11367.
